Certificate of Advanced Study in Technology Law and Entrepreneurship

CASTLE focuses on the intersection of law, technology, and business management

Study Technology Law and Entrepreneurship with CASTLE

Syracuse Law offers several Certificates of Advanced Study (CAS) that let students build focused expertise in a specialty. All CAS programs are sanctioned by the State of New York.

Launched in 2022 with the Whitman School of Management, the Certificate of Advanced Study in Technology Law and Entrepreneurship (CASTLE) is open to students interested in the legal and business sides of technology.

What is CASTLE?

CASTLE is a CAS that focuses on the intersection of law, technology, and business management. It is designed for law and graduate students interested in innovation and working with startups. If you take part in the Innovation Law Center (ILC), or plan to take intellectual property courses, you may already be on your way to meeting CASTLE requirements.

What courses does CASTLE require?

The curriculum totals a minimum of 12 credits and includes:

  • A foundational entrepreneurship course at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management
  • An applied capstone course at Syracuse Law through the ILC
  • Electives in areas such as intellectual property, patents, venture capital, and start-up advising, among others

See the Syracuse University course catalog for current offerings.

Who Can Apply and When?

CASTLE is open to graduate and law students at Syracuse University, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF), and SUNY Upstate Medical University. Applicants who are not currently enrolled in a Syracuse University graduate program must hold a completed bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution before enrolling.

You can apply at any point during your graduate program. Syracuse Law students should apply in the spring of their 1L year.

Does It Cost Anything?

There is no additional charge to enroll in CASTLE. You pay the standard tuition and fees for your courses at your school’s current rates. If the classes you take meet CASTLE criteria, you can be recognized for the certificate at no extra cost.
