The Honorable Deborah Karalunas L’82

The Hon. Deborah Karalunas L’82 has earned a Law Honors Award in recognition of her distinguished career, her dedication to mentoring future legal professionals, and her commitment to advancing women in the field. As the first woman to serve as Administrative Judge of the Fifth Judicial District, Judge Karalunas is a trailblazer, setting a standard of excellence through her leadership and judicial expertise. Her service as a Supreme Court Justice and as the inaugural Presiding Justice of the Supreme Court Commercial Division in Onondaga County reflects both her deep understanding of the law and her ability to navigate complex legal matters with fairness and integrity.
Beyond the courtroom, she has been a dedicated mentor and educator, sharing her experience with students at Syracuse University College of Law and guiding them as they prepare for their own careers in the legal profession. Through her involvement in numerous bar and judicial associations, Judge Karalunas has worked to expand opportunities for women in law and to strengthen the legal community. Her contributions have left a lasting impact, and we are proud to recognize her with this well-deserved honor.
Professor Suzette Meléndez

Professor Suzette Meléndez has earned a Law Honors Award for her unwavering dedication to expanding opportunities in the legal profession and ensuring that all members of the community have the support they need to succeed. Since joining the College of Law faculty in 2002, she has been a tireless advocate for students, creating spaces where they feel heard, valued, and empowered. As Director of the Children’s Rights and Family Law Clinic, she guided students in serving vulnerable populations, instilling in them a deep sense of responsibility and justice. Her leadership at the College of Law reflects her commitment to fostering an environment where all students can thrive.
Beyond the classroom, Professor Meléndez’s impact extends into the legal profession, where she has worked to strengthen representation and mentorship through her involvement with organizations like Arriba, the Latinx Bar Association of Central New York, and the Central New York Women’s Bar Association. Her career has been defined by a steadfast belief in equity, access, and the power of legal education to transform lives, making her a most deserving recipient of this honor.
Richard (Rich) Levy L’77

Rich Levy has earned a Law Honors Award in recognition of his distinguished legal career and his unwavering dedication to Syracuse University College of Law. A leader in bankruptcy litigation, Rich has had an impressive and impactful career, including the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Rich’s commitment to his alma mater has been extraordinary. As a longtime member of the Syracuse University Law Alumni Association, chair of the Law Honors Committee, and a Distinguished Lecturer in Law, he has mentored and inspired countless students and alumni. His dedication goes beyond service—it is a reflection of his deep belief in the power of legal education and the strength of the Syracuse Law community. Whether leading initiatives, teaching in the JDinteractive program, or simply offering guidance to those who seek it, Rich’s impact is felt across generations of Syracuse lawyers. His contributions have left an enduring mark on the College of Law, making him a truly deserving recipient of this honor.
