Professor Sanjay Chhablani’s teaching and research focus are on criminal law and procedure. His scholarly work has addressed the Sixth Amendment, the right to counsel, the right to a jury trial, and the death penalty. Professor Chhablani also teaches at the Forensic and National Security Sciences Institute at Syracuse University and collaborates with the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

In 2017 Professor Chhablani received Syracuse University’s highest teaching award and was designated the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor of Teaching Excellence. In 2007 he received the University’s teaching award for non-tenured faculty and was selected for the College of Law’s Res Ipsa Loquitur Award by the graduating classes of 2006 and 2014.

Professor Chhablani began his legal career at a national law firm where, in addition to assisting in the litigation of commercial disputes, he represented pro bono persons incarcerated on Illinois’ death row. He later joined the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta and represented indigent death row inmates in Georgia and Alabama.
