Matthew L. Kronisch joins the Syracuse University College of Law as an SPL Distinguished Fellow in Residence. Kronisch will conduct research and offer a seminar focused on the policy and law of homeland intelligence, as well as serve as an intelligence community career advisor for the Syracuse University Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence.

Kronisch established the intelligence law practice at the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in December 2003 and has served as Associate General Counsel for Intelligence since November 2005. He leads the practice of intelligence and information law across DHS’ 2400 lawyer Office of the General Counsel. Appointed to the career Senior Executive Service in December 2006, he received the Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Executive in 2011, and in 2018 accepted appointment to the Advisory Committee to the ABA’s Standing Committee on Law and National Security.

Prior to joining DHS, Mr. Kronisch served as Assistant for Inspections in the Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Oversight. Between 1998 and 2002, Mr. Kronisch served as in-house counsel in the undersea fiber optic cable and real estate development industries.

Mr. Kronisch retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve in December 2010. As an active duty Navy Judge Advocate, he served as Command Judge Advocate, Naval Special Warfare Development Group; Officer in Charge, Naval Legal Service Office Detachment, Naval Air Station Oceana; Legal Advisor, Joint Interagency Task Force West; Trial Counsel, Naval Legal Service Office, National Capitol; Senior Defense Counsel, U.S. Navy Regional Physical Evaluation Board, Bethesda, Maryland; and Appellate Defense Counsel, Office of the Judge Advocate General.

Originally hailing from New Jersey, Mr. Kronisch received J.D. and LL.M (International and Comparative Law) degrees from Georgetown University Law Center, and his B.A. in International Relations from Bucknell University.
